Hernandez

Tenor

Gabriel Hernandez is a talented Puerto Rican-American tenor, acclaimed for his recent appearances as "a wonderful tenor" (Opera Wire) and "the highlight of the performance" (Maryland Theatre Guide). He is dedicated to using his art to showcase the experiences of queer individuals, as seen in his photo series, Taking Up Space: Queer Identity in Opera, which debuted at the Countee Cullen Library in 2021.

Hernandez's 2023-2024 season featured several role debuts: Remendado in Hogfish Festival's CarmXn, Le Comte Barigoule in Viardot's Cendrillon with Resonance Works, a return to Opera Ithaca as Peter Quint in Britten's Turn of the Screw and Aret in Haydn’s Jupiter’s Journey to the Earth with Little Opera Theatre of New York.

In 2022-2023 Hernandez sang Torquemada in Ravel's L'Heure Espagnole with New Camerata Opera and the world premiere of Yours Forever, Lincoln, as the title character, with Quarry Theater. He also made his company debut with Opera Ithaca as Pluto in Orpheus in the Underworld.

As a Gate-City Bank resident artist at Fargo-Moorhead Opera in 2021-2022, he debuted as Joe in Robert Paterson's Companion, sang the Sergeant in The Barber of Seville, and reimagined the company's outreach program through digital interactions with local schools. He was also featured in Merola Opera's award-winning film project Back Home: Through the Stage Door and joined the Lakes Area Music Festival as a Vocal Fellow.

The artist has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a 2019 Career Bridges Grant and participation in OPERA America's 2019 Career Blueprints for Singers.
